Review: Velveteen by Daniel Marks

Velveteen
Title: Velveteen

Novella: Vermillion in the anthology Kiss Me Deadly: 13 Tales of Paranormal Love

Author: Daniel Marks

Publication date: October 2012

Synopsis:

Velveteen Monroe is dead. At 16, she was kidnapped and murdered by a madman named Bonesaw. But that’s not the problem.

The problem is she landed in purgatory. And while it’s not a fiery inferno, it’s certainly no heaven. It’s gray, ashen, and crumbling more and more by the day, and everyone has a job to do. Which doesn’t leave Velveteen much time to do anything about what’s really on her mind.

Bonesaw.

Velveteen aches to deliver the bloody punishment her killer deserves. And she’s figured out just how to do it. She’ll haunt him for the rest of his days.

It’ll be brutal... and awesome.

But crossing the divide between the living and the dead has devastating consequences. Velveteen’s obsessive haunting cracks the foundations of purgatory and jeopardizes her very soul. A risk she’s willing to take—except fate has just given her reason to stick around: an unreasonably hot and completely off-limits coworker.

Velveteen can’t help herself when it comes to breaking rules... or getting revenge. And she just might be angry enough to take everyone down with her.

My rating: ★★★★☆

Really cool Purgatory picture :)
A very Supernatural Purgatory ;)
(That reminded me a lot of the shadowquake tentacle things!)
Velveteen Monroe was murdered by a psychopathic serial killer (not that there's any other kind of serial killer, I suppose, lol). Unfortunately for her, she didn't make the cut for Heaven. Fortunately, she didn't go to Hell, either. She is stuck in what is known as Purgatory, which is very gray, dreary, and deteriorating with every passing shadowquake. Shadowquakes are as they sound: they are basically earthquakes, but in Purgatory. They are caused when the dead cross into the living world, which is a big No-No! Bad Ghostie! The bigger ones happening when Bad, Bad Magic is done on said plane, especially when using enslaved souls. I guess it's sort of an action-reaction sort of deal, with Purgatory getting the bad end of things. And by bad I mean giant, scary, tentacle-like things coming from the sky and snatching up the souls and... well, I'm not sure. But horrors happen when those things touch you!

Synopsis:

Ellie Jordan’s job is to catch and remove unwanted ghosts. Part detective, part paranormal exterminator, Ellie operates out of Savannah, Georgia, one of the oldest and most haunted cities in North America.

When a family contacts her to deal with a disturbing presence in the old mansion they’ve recently purchased, Ellie first believes it to be a typical, by-the-book specter, a residual haunting by a restless spirit. Instead, she finds herself confronting an evil older and more powerful than she’d ever expected, rooted in the house’s long and sordid history of luxury, sin, and murder. The dangerous entity seems particularly interested in her clients’ ten-year-old daughter.

Soon her own life is in danger, and Ellie must find a way to exorcise the darkness of the house before it can kill her, her clients, or their frightened young child.

My rating: ★★★★★

When I read this book, I had already read two horror novels before this one. I was on a horror novel reading streak, you could say, and Ellie Jordan, Ghost Trapper really satisfied my need for even more horror!

Synopsis:

The truck should have turned Libbi Piper into a Libbi Pancake — and it would have, too, if Aaron hadn’t shown up and saved her life. The problem? Aaron’s the local Grim Reaper… and he only saved Libbi’s life because he needs someone to take over his job. Now, Libbi has two days to choose between dying like she was supposed to, or living a lonely life as Death Incarnate. Talk about a rock and a hard place.

And the choice goes from hard to sucktastic when her best friend shows up marked: condemned as a future murderer. Libbi could have an extra week to stop the murder and fix the mark… but only if she accepts Aaron’s job as Reaper, trapping herself in her crappy town forever, invisible and inaudible to everyone except the newly dead. But, if she refuses? Her best friend is headed straight for Hell.
My rating: ★★★★☆

When I first came across this book and saw that it was about reapers, I knew I had to read it! Call me morbid (see what I did there? lol), but I LOVE reapers! And this book did not disappoint! It was awesome!

Synopsis:

All Mick Bogerman wanted to do was teach his little brother how to swim in the coolest swimming pool in town. He didn’t ask to take care of a bunch of Sea-Monkeys while he was there. He certainly didn’t mean to morph one of them into a mermaid by feeding it genetically enhanced super food. No one is more surprised than Mick when the creature starts luring unsuspecting adults into the deep end of the pool. Adults who don’t resurface.

Join Mick as he battles a powerful adversary: a bloodthirsty mermaid who hypnotizes with a golden gaze, shatters glass with a piercing shriek, and reveals her true menacing self by the light of a full moon.

In this second installment of the Slug Pie Stories, Mick will teach you, as the title suggests, How to Rid Your Swimming Pool of a Bloodthirsty Mermaid... you know, if you're ever in such predicament ;)

But Mick soon wishes he’d taken some human company with him, because lurking in every corner, reaching from every crevice, is another hungry corpse. No wonder the place is named Zombie Cave! And finding treasure in the twisty tunnels is a lot harder when your map disintegrates. And man-oh-man the cold, dark tide chases fast. But the worst part about fighting off ravenous flesh-eaters is the one monster deadlier than a regular zombie...the worst of the worst...Pirate Pete.

My rating: ★★★★☆

How to Navigate Zombie Cave and Defeat Pirate Pete is about exactly what the title suggests... Mick sets out to this Zombie Cave in the search of Pirate Pete's treasure and defeat him while he's at it. Why is he doing this, you ask? It's really sweet actually. You see, Mick wants to find the treasure because he wants to help his mom financially! Awwws! Such a sweet kid :)

Desperate to escape the demons, Ash accepts a place at a university in the small town of Blackstone, in the middle of nowhere - little knowing that it isn't coincidence that led her there but the pull of the Venantium, the sorcerers who maintain the barrier keeping demons from crossing from the Darkworld into our own world.

All-night parties, new friendships and a life without rules or limits are all part of the package of student life - but demons never give up, and their focus on Ash has attracted the attention of every sorcerer in the area. Ash is soon caught between her new life and a group of other students with a connection to the Darkworld, who could offer the answers she's looking for. The demons want something from her, and someone is determined to kill her before she can find out what it is.

In a world where darkness lurks beneath the surface, not everyone is what they appear to be...

My rating: ★★★☆☆

I have an unhealthy obssesion with #Supernatural yes I do and this is SERIOUS!
When I first saw what Darkness Watching was about, I thought it sounded very interesting! Especially since I've been obsessively watching Supernatural! The whole demon thing really caught my attention! And I really loved that aspect of the book! The magic and the whole demon thing in this book was very different from anything I've read before! The Darkworld, too, was very interesting. Plus I really loved the setting! It had this creepy feel to it... I don't know how else to describe it.

Synopsis:

In the aftermath of the events that nearly killed him, Parker Chipp is trying to learn to cope better with life as a Watcher. And it seems to be working...until he wakes up in jail with a hangover and 12 hours of missing time. Darkness has somehow taken control and Parker doesn't have a clue how to stop him. He finds an unlikely ally in Jack, the mysterious guy in the motorcycle jacket who offers to help Parker master his abilities as a Watcher. But even as they practice, the darkness inside Parker is getting more and more powerful, taking over Parker’s body and doing everything he can to destroy Parker's life.

When Jack reveals that there is another kind of Night Walker, known as a Taker, Parker starts to wonder if the strange things happening in Oakville are more than just a coincidence. After all, people are more than just sleepwalking. They're emptying their savings accounts with no memory of doing so, wandering into strange parts of town and disappearing, they're even killing other people--all in their sleep. If Parker wants to find out what's happening or have any hope of seeing his father again, he’ll have to defy Jack and put his own life in danger...because the more he learns about these other Night Walkers, the more certain he becomes that his life isn't the only one that could be lost.

My rating: ★★★★☆

So in this second installment of The Night Walkers, we have Parker who is finally getting a hang of this whole Watcher thing... well, kind of thanks to Mia's dreams. But when Mia, Addie, and Finn leave on vacation for a whole week, things take a horrible turn into Freakyville. At the start of the week, things seem to be going somewhat okay for Parker, nothing more than sleep deprivation and exhaustion, but keeping Darkness under control. Until one day, when the week is almost up, the tight hold Parker had on Darkness loosens, allowing Darkness to take over his body once again, landing him in freakin' jail! Crazy, I know.

As the girls struggle to escape Mary's wrath, loyalties are questioned, friendships are torn apart, and lives are forever altered.
