Synopsis:

Sixteen-year old Desolation Black wants nothing more than to stay in Hell where it’s cold and lonely and totally predictable. Instead, she’s sent back to Earth where she must face the evil she despises and the good she always feared.

When Desi is forced to embrace her inner demon, she assumes her choice has been made—that she has no hope of being anything other than what her father, Lucifer, has created her to be. What she doesn’t count on, is finding a reason to change—something she’s never had before—a friend.

My rating: ★☆☆☆☆

I came in being very excited to read this book! I mean, it just sounds plain awesome! But, unfortunately, it did not meet my expectations :(

First of all, throughout most of the book I had no idea what was going on. I felt like we were dumped in the middle of the story! More often than not I found myself asking "What exactly is the plot here? Where is the story going?" Nothing was really happening to move things forward! Well, I felt like we didn't get to the actual plot of the book until we were about 75% into the story =/

The main character Desolation AKA Desi... *sigh* I didn't really feel a connection with her and therefore, did not really care for her. She was such a push over with everyone I just wanted her to stand up for herself! Her father, James, Daniel! Girl, defend yourself! And some of her actions just made no sense to me, especially when it came to James. This guy... ugh! The relationship Desi had going on with James frustrated me to no end! I mean, WTF was going on here?? I'll try to explain this as best I can: One second they are sucking face and she seems to not mind it, feeling physically attracted to the guy. Then, literally 2 seconds later she wants him out and despises him! Where the hell does this relationship lie exactly?! Especially since, apparently, James is in love with someone else? Why the hell are you playing tonsil-hockey with Desi, then?? He seemed like a huge jerk and I just didn't like him at all! I mean, where the hell is this physical attraction between him and Desi exactly coming from?! So confused, so frustrated! Ugh!

deep breath, ok?

Okay, Sammy *takes deep breath* So, anyway, the mythology in this book was really interesting. Desi's father is actually Lucifer! But wait... Lucifer is also Norse mythology's Loki! At first I was kind of iffy on this mixture of mythology, but now that I really thought about it, I kind of like it! You see, before Lucifer was, well, Lucifer, he was Loki. In the past he was known as Loki, but present day (he changed his name) he is known as Lucifer and he rules over past Hel (that's the Norse underworld, I guess), present Hell. Makes sense? It's basically like when the Romans adopted the Greek gods and Zeus became Jupiter. I thought that was very cool!

But besides that, this book was just... no. Not for me. I wanted to like it, but I just couldn't! And if you've been around a while, you know I don't give out very many 1 or 2 stars... this might actually be my 2nd 1-star review! And it makes me sad :( Will I continue this series? Probably not. Would I recommend this book? I don't know... I never say, "Don't read this book, EVER!" They say no two people ever read the same book, so if it sounds like something you might like, do give it a try! It was just not for me.

Have you read this book? If so, what did you think about it? If not, what do you think? Does it sound like something you might want to read? Leave me a link to your review or comment below! :)

  1. Guess a cool looking cover can't make up for a frustrating story. I haven't written many one star reviews either - it takes a really bad book to get me there!

    1. Right? I really loved the cover and the concept thoroughly intrigued me... but they say it's what inside that counts, right? Unfortunately the inside didn't wow me :(
